BRUCE CONNELL

ARTIST

"During my time at Reigate College of Art the sculpture department was invited to submit font designs for a new self-build church, Christ the King, in Salfords, Surrey. Mine was the winning design and it's shape reflects roof trusses in the building.

I spent nine months carving a two ton block of Portland Stone, turning the lid in mahogany, and casting the cross-shaped handle in aluminium. Four years later my son Matthew was christened there, and forty years on, in 2008, I returned to celebrate the anniversary of the font's installation."
